While a plugin for backing up your WordPress site may not be as fun and exciting as a fancy new gallery or newsletter popup, it’s still an essential tool you should utilize on your website.

Don’t you guys back up my site?

Yes we do make backups of your website, as will most reputable web hosting providers. That being said, as a website owner, you should never be 100% reliant on a third party backup. You never know when an meteor may hit your web host’s servers! Luckily there are many easy to use and free WordPress plugins to backup your site.

Which WordPress Backup Plugin Do You Recommend?

We’ve found the most useful free backup plugin to be BackWPup – WordPress Backup Plugin. With over 500,000 active installations, BackWPup is one of the most used backup plugins available. It is reviewed very well, with an overall rating of 4/5 stars at the time of this post.

What makes this plugin the best? It’s packed with features usually only found in paid plugins. Aside from backing up your WordPress installation & database, the free version lets you immediately store those backups off-server via Dropbox, S3 Services, Email, Microsoft Azure, Rackspace Cloud Files, or to SugarSync. This is an important feature as many free WordPress backup plugins only save a local file on your web server, which again, in the event of a meteor strike on our servers, will not be much help to you.

The interface is very clean and easy to use, making it possible to download the plugin, and have it configured in just a few minutes.

Working job and jobs overview

While we are very impressed with this plugin, there are a few limitations you should be aware of. First, there is not a 1 click restore from backup function. There is a detailed guide on how to restore your backup which isn’t too daunting, but it is by no means a 1 click solution. Secondly, as with all free plugins, support is limited. You are getting the plugin for free, so you can’t be too disappointed when the plugin developers help their paid customers first.

Speaking of the Pro version, what does it offer over the free version?

The pro version offers backups to Google Drive as well as Amazon Glacier, more options database backups, and most importantly, premium support.

Overall we are very impressed with BackWPup and it is truly worthy of the title of the best free wordpress backup plugin.

Bonus: Paid Options

If you are running a mission critical site where you can’t mess around with varying degrees of support (read: need someone to yell at if it doesn’t work) take a look at these options. Many of these plugins not only help backing up your site, but include easier ways to restore your site, and the ability to easily migrate to a new web host from a backup.
